Grieve in a Healthy Way

Updated: Aug 4

Now is a better time than ever to start living a healthier life. Although you're grieving, life continues. And by living a healthier life, your grief will take a lesser toll on your health. When you take steps to live a healthier life while grieving, such as by sleeping enough, grieving will take a lesser toll on you.

Make Sure You're Sleeping Enough

Your body needs between eight and 12 hours of sleep each night. When you're mourning the loss of a loved one, your mind may automatically go to thoughts of them when you lay down. However, you can curb thinking about your loss before bed by taking time during the day to process your emotions. Also, avoid using your phone or tablet to play games or surf the web before bed. These devices emit blue light, suppressing melatonin production and altering suppressing melatonin production and altering your circadian rhythm.

Take Up Yoga or Meditation

Yoga and meditation can improve brain function. What's more, when you partake in these two activities, you may decrease your anxiety and depression, especially during this time when you're more emotional than usual. Rather than stay at home and practice by yourself, consider taking a class to learn the proper techniques and get out among other people.

Spend Time With Your Loved Ones

Spending time with loved ones takes your mind off your loss for a bit. On the other hand, you can turn to these individuals as your support system if you need someone to talk to during this trying time. They may encourage you to take better care of yourself as you're grieving. Additionally, when you spend time with those you care about, you may decrease your stress.

Improve Your Career Prospects

Consider taking steps to improve your career potential. You may increase your self-confidence and better your life overall in the process. Plus, it's a healthy way to distract yourself from the loss. For instance, you could go back to school. Fortunately, the internet has made it so people can attend all of their classes online and earn a degree in their own time. You'll then open the gates to new and better opportunities without ever having to leave the comfort of your home. Another option is to open a business. You reap the reward of being in charge and will even have some flexibility with your schedule. You have a lot on your mind right now, so it might be in your best interest to take one step at a time when starting a business. One of those steps should be forming a limited liability company (LLC). You'll reap the reward of limited liability, less paperwork, more flexibility, and tax breaks.
